Having just compared the depiction on SkyDemon for an airfield without an ATZ with the same airfield on the CAA chart (in this case Popham), it is noticeable that the SkyDemon depiction is significantly less prominent, although the chart is also significantly less cluttered. In particular the CAA chart includes a blue ring in addition to the airfield symbol itself, while the ring is missing from the SkyDemon version.

I also note that some airfields shown on the CAA chart are missing completely, for example Harpsden Park approximately 4nm west of White Waltham is not shown at all in SkyDemon.

Issuing a NOTAM would indeed be a good solution - but not one that SkyDemon could add value to.

The use of a paper chart won't help as the busy airfields have the same symbol as the quiet farm strips - unless you plan to avoid every single airfield, in which case good luck when flying with OVC020. I was suggesting that SD could offer a way to make the busy airfields more conspicuous as a value-add feature.

There is a thread running on The Flyer Forums http://forums.flyer.co.uk/viewtopic.php?f=1&t=98918&start=15 about pilots flying through the overhead of busy active airfields which don't have the protection of an ATZ. I suspect part of the reason is that these airfields are too small on the chart and are missed by pilots both in flight and when planning a route, especially those not familiar with the area.

Would it be possible to highlight these airfield somehow on the chart? Some options:
  • draw a not-quite-ATZ around them as an optional layer in both planning and flight modes
  • have a pop up warning in flight when approaching the airfield in flight
  • have a pop up warning when planning a flight through the overhead
  • include a warning in the flight planning page

Of course, many airfields aren't busy most of the time, so a threshold of a something like 5,000 moments a year should be included to avoid warnings about every single farm strip. I appreciate this requires extra data to be generated and managed within SkyDemon, but once set up I would hope it would be fairly static data.
